Excellent exposition of the standard JW mantra re 1914. which I bet not one JW in a hundred has mastered. More erudite contributors to this forum than I have demolished this concept, exposing several glaring fallacies in its string of disjointed elements.

Please explain!
by Freedom rocks inhi please can someone explain this in laymans terms for me coz i be ever got it as a jw and still don't.
it doesn't make sense to me.
bible chronology indicates that god’s kingdom was established in heaven in 1914. this is shown by a prophecy recorded in chapter 4 of the bible book of daniel.. overview of the prophecy.

The Preaching Method Has Flip-Flopped Again
by pale.emperor inim currently reading a book called jehovah's witnesses: portrait of a contemporary religious movement (https://www.amazon.co.uk/jehovahs-witnesses-portrait-contemporary-religious/dp/0415266106).the researcher is a social scientist, was never a jw, who studied with the witnesses solely to write this book.
his research has been quite thorough and objective which is commendable.he mentioned in the book how rutherford didn't want his colporters (pioneers) giving their own sermons or bible interpretation, but instead he had them going door to door with his records.
(i have some converted to mp3, they're very boring).

In both cases (door-to door canvassing with IPad vs with phonograph, and cart vs placards) are clearlly regressive and a de facto renunciation of Knorr's progressive innovations.

Did You Go To Meetings in Very Inclement Weather?
by minimus inliving in new england means having lots of snow and cold.
elders were very reluctant to cancel or reschedule a meeting due to the weather.
i lived 3 towns away from the kingdom hall and if it was icy and treacherous my vote would always be to cancel the meeting....and forget about rescheduling!.

My experience was that people just loved when meetings were cancelled but would never admit to it.

Why "Most high"?
by Doug Mason inif there were only one god, why do we encounter the expression, "most high god"?.
is this not indicative of polytheism, and of levels (or degrees) of god-ness?.

This fits with the definition of monolatry, whose believers accept the notion of one superior or supreme god presiding within a pantheon of many, lesser gods. There's evidence that the Israelites were initially monolatrist before evolving toward monotheism.

The Pastorals
by Doug Mason inall will be very familiar with:.
"all scripture is inspired by god and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness" (2 timothy 3:16, nrsv).
"we wait for the blessed hope and the manifestation of the glory of our great god and savior, jesus christ.

Very impressive Doug, as always. I'm looking forward to giving the work a thorough look. Your abiding fascination with JWs is quite remarkable, given that you were never personally involved with them.

"Thing is most witnesses I knew looked for excuses to miss meetings."
Yeah, especially when, during a snowstorm, they get the welcome phone call: "meeting cancelled."
Hoorays and high-fives all around!

Can all 7 members of the Governing Body ride in this elevator at the same time?
by Alfred inin case the picture didn't load.... i'm referring to an elevator with a (quite common) weight capacity of 1,500 lbs.. would the 7 members of the governing body exceed this weight limit??
david splane: 195 pounds.
stephen lett: 205 pounds.

Alfred, where are you getting their weights from? In Lett's most recent appearance on video, he seems to have lost some weight (loose fitting shirt, suit, etc.)

the GB's coup of the FDS
by Magnum ini believe the gb's takeover of the fds was an illegal coup - not illegal relative to the laws of land, but illegal according to jw "laws" or doctrine.. according to jw doctrine, the fds is god's channel of communication between heaven and earth.
before the coup, the fds was defined to be all the anointed on earth, and the gb was part of that group and merely the spokesman for the group - individual gb members having no more authority than non-gb members of the fds.. however, a few years ago, the gb, independently of the other members of the fds, decided that it alone was the fds.
that, to me, was an illegal overthrow of the body (fds); it was a coup.. suppose the u.s. president decided that he has all power, and that he removed the powers of the u.s. congress.
-
Room 215
The rank-and-file's quiescence to the coup -- a blatant power grab, really - is really astonishing. And yes, remarks by that pin-head Splane prior to the change did make vague references to their annoyance at non-GB anointed who sought a place at the table invoking their status as an FDS member in the field.
